Yesterday was the 80th anniversary of the Trinity test, the first nuclear bomb explosion.
When I moved to Socorro, New Mexico in the final years of the 20th century, I found trinitite in my front yard. I think.
I was starting some computer work on an upgrade project for the Karl Jansky Very Large Array radio telescope. I did not expect to be standing only 35 miles from Trinity, but from Socorro to the "back door" to the White Sands test range, there's the Rio Grande and the dusty crossroads village of San Antonio NM, a wonderful family farm, and the Owl Bar.

New Mexico is such a gorgeous state in its natural beauty. I so vividly remember the drive down to White Sands, through Socorro.
